| They actually are Ford heads | October 24 2007,5:43 PM |
| I was at a friends place a couple of weeks ago, saw these in the previous listing and thought the same thing. Then Dan whips out and old FMS catalogue and sure enough, there they were. They were only offered a short time because they were immediate outlawed by the sanctioning bodies. Besides the heads, because of the special pushrod spacing, there was also a special tunnel port block, cam blank. They also required unique valve covers, head bolts, pushrods, etc. I don't think they'd be very useful without the rest of the stuff. Kelly |

| directly from Junior Johnson and were intended to top off a new Sprint car engine for Casey Luna in the middle of the 1990s. They were never run on an engine, but were mocked up on a Fontana (Clevor) or Motorsport block at the time. The mock up was initially performed to help ascertain the rocker geometry. Once that was settled, the custom Jesel gear depicted in the auction was purchased. They were fully ported by Diamond-Elkins, one of the premier porting shops at the time. They flowed 350 CFM (intake) on the bench back then. Don’t recall the velocity or any exhaust numbers. The valves were 2.14 and 1.65. I believe Casey Luna’s old race car stills hold the singular distinction of being the only one to ever win an outlaw sprint car championship with a Ford engine. Ron Shaver (Shaver Specialtes), more famously known for Chevy sprint car engine wizardry, was Casey Luna’s exclusive engine shop during that championship year and was experimenting with these heads for the next generation of power plants for Luna. I do not recall why this engine program did not continue, as Casey Luna had a lot of momentum at the time. Kelly is correct about FMS marketing a “special” companion block to these heads. I faintly recall the heads having an odd exhaust geometry. But, the mockup the Shaver staff perfomed was successful with the custom rockers you see in the auction. FMS p/n for the heads is F1ZM-6049-T351, as I recall. It was the mid-1990’s when I last saw this specific pair of heads, but I know Shaver never had another set and all of his other Ford motors for other clients used different heads. Terribly sparse eBay ad. You would think they were being charged a dollar per alpha character. -Chad |

"Pardon me, while I whip this out!" Here's a scan of the Ford Motorsport catalog page Kelly is referring to: http://www.bacomatic.org/gallery2/v/hidden/dan/dan-cars/album19/351_tunnelport_ad.jpg > I faintly recall the heads having an odd exhaust geometry. They had paired center exhausts like a SBC. Also the intake ports were laid out like a SBC: http://www.bacomatic.org/gallery2/v/hidden/dan/dan-cars/album19/351_tunnelport_heads_intake.jpg That means a unique cam core and presumably different lifter bore locations, which is the likely reason for the T351 block. With some custom rocker arms like Chad mentions, they could be run on a standard Ford block. I think Jim Sams mentioned the tunnel port heads were developed by Junior Johnson. Dick Trickle won an Arca race at Daytona or Talledega with a pair, after which they were promptly banned. Jim mentioned that RDI at one point still had almost the whole production run of heads and intakes sitting around. Many years ago, I saw a stack of them at the big Columbus Ford swapmeet. Dan Jones |
