The holy grail of 351M/400 blocks.
The 400 FMX block is a special version of the standard Ford 400 block. What makes it different is that most 400’s have the standard Ford big block (370/429/460) bellhousing bolt pattern and a unique motor mount pattern.
However, in 1973 only, Ford produced a special version of the 400 with a small block bellhousing bolt pattern and dual motor mounts. This allows it to bolt up to a Pantera’s ZF bell-housing. BTW, the 400 is a taller deck (10.296" versus 9.2") cousin to the 351C with larger main journals -dan jones www.thepanteraplace.com/page35.htm

Some time ago I had been trying to figure out what the "3N137877" was that was stamped on the back of my 400 FMX block by the oil pressure sending unit.
I traded some e-mails with a guy that knows a good bit about Ford car assembly at the Norfolk Plant in the 1970's. He told me that was a partial VIN for a Norfolk built car and that the 100000 range of serial numbers were used on Fords (500000 were for Mercs). The last cars assembled at Norfolk were Galaxies and LTDs so that verifies that the engines could be found in not just the intermediate Torino/Ranchero but also in the full-size cars. Years ago, there had been a good bit of talk, on the main board, about which cars these motors came in--what little Ford documentation anyone could find identified the trans/body combo as FMX/intermediate. So I guess the partial VIN for the car my block came out of would be 3NxxS137877 (S would identify the 400). In 1973 the xx (series code) could be: 51, 53, 54, 55, 56, 58, 60, 61, 62, 64, 66, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76
This block did not always look this good, I bought it from Joe, who had found it in the back of a old Ranchero in the middle of a muddy field, I spent may hours hammering the pis-tons out of this block.

I have an all original (built and shipped in Oct 1973, sold in 1974) Galaxie 500 with the 400 "Modified" Cleveland block and FMX transmission still in the car. If you have any questions concerning numbers, originality, VINs, dates, drop me a line and I'll look it up.

I saw one of these in a salvage yard some years ago but it had only the larger bolt (429-460)pattern drilled & taped but had bosses for small bloch pattern .I still regret not buying it it was cherry. a really rare find!
